Identifying Local Opportunities

I accessed the archives for The Daytona Beach News Journal for this assignment.

 1) Edgewater man trying to adopt arrested on child porn charges

The gist of this story is basic; a man in Edgewater, FL was going through the process of trying to adopt a child. The story does not say how far in the process he had gotten, but the verbiage makes it sounds like he was further along than just applying. It was discovered that this man possessed child pornography after the police received information from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. He is in jail and unsurprisingly the adoption is not going to go through. The problem here is that a sick man was able to even begin the adoption process. The state of Florida has the problem. The story makes you wonder if things like this have happened in the past. Have children slipped through the cracks and been adopted by people that have no right to be around children? Unfortunately, they probably have. In that case it would sadly be the child's problem as well.

2) WVHA to providers: ‘no more money’ - Hospital Authority tells health providers there are no funds available on top of what’s in budget

The West Volusia Health Care Authority provides funding to health care providers that serve the needy. WVHA has exhausted almost of its reserves in the past two years under a deficit budget. The board has come to the decision that it will no longer allow the agencies it supports to spend over budget. The problem is that agencies who spend over budget depend on the WVHA for assistance. The article names Family Health Source as an example. FHS provides care to people whether they have money/insurance and has no way of knowing whether they will go over budget in a certain quarter or not.

3) LET’S TALK PETS - Cat passed up for adoption for 2 years seeks a home

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A0068297D3358?p=WORLDNEWS

This story is about a cat who has been in the Edgewater Animal Shelter since it was a kitten. It is now two years old. The shelter reached out to the News Journal to ask them to feature Groucho and see if anyone might be able to help him. Most of the article is tips on how to rehome a cat in a home that might already have other animals, etc. as well as general cat care tips. The problem is that Groucho doesn't have a home. Groucho has the problem because his future at the shelter may be bleak if he doesn't get adopted. The shelter also has the problem because they must pay for Groucho's food, health care, etc. with what is surely an already very slim budget.

4) Police looking for man who robbed Daytona Beach bank

The Daytona Beach police are looking for a man who robbed a SunTrust Bank last Monday, 1/22/18. The article provides a description of the man, what he was wearing, and the car he got into after the robbery. He did leave with an undisclosed amount of money.
The problem is this man committed a serious crime and is still free. The police have the problem as it is their responsibility to catch him and bring him to jail. The bank teller has a problem also as he/she is likely very traumatized from being robbed. The bank did lose some money so that is a problem unless the funds are recovered.

5) Police: Daytona woman with brain injury missing

http://infoweb.newsbank.com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/resources/doc/nb/news/169A0068614A9928?p=WORLDNEWS

A woman who suffered a serious brain injury and has schizophrenia is missing from Daytona Beach. The article gives a physical description, where she was last seen, and explains that she requires medication. The reporter gives contact information for the police department if anyone sees her or has information. The problem is that a woman is missing. This is the police department's problem as they must work to find her. It is also a problem for the woman and her family. Her family is certainly distraught as they don't know where their loved one is. The missing woman may be in danger and not even know it, considering her mental state.
