Halfway Reflection
1) Tenaciousness
is a competency. What are the behaviors that you have used
(or developed) to keep up with the requirements of this course?
This course will require you to approach people and talk to them.
If that's not something you're comfortable with already, you will be when
you're done. I personally am very timid when it comes to talking to people, so
I have had to work on developing that behavior throughout this course.
2) Tenaciousness
is also about attitude. Talk about a moment or two when
you felt like "giving up." What pulled you through? Do you feel like
you've developed a tenacious attitude during the past two months? What
experience or experiences most contributed to this?
I admit that there were times I did give up. I waited too long
to look at the assignment requirements a couple different weeks and just didn't
have time to get them done. Read ahead and work ahead would be my biggest tip.
One assignment required reading an entire book. I looked at the instructions
the day it was due; it didn't happen, and I didn't get the points. The class is
structured in a way that everything is up to you. That is encouraging because
it gives you the power to make what you want out of the class. I think my
tenacious attitude has developed throughout this course, but I also think it
takes tenacity to be an online student anyways.
3) Three
tips. What are three tips you would offer next semester's
student about (1) fostering the skills that support tenacity and (2) developing
the 'tenacious mindset'?
I consider myself to be a tenacious person in general and
especially when it comes to education. I have been a college student for a
long, long time. I've paid cash for classes when I didn't qualify for aid and
worked full-time while also taking a full course load. So my first tip is to
remember that there are really no excuses for not getting something done. You
can choose to not do it, but it's a choice. It seems like you're being hard on
yourself, but sometimes I think that's a good thing. The second tip is to be
determined and work AHEAD. At least read the assignments as far ahead as the
next two weeks to know if you're going to have conduct five interviews or read
a biography. The third is to set a schedule for yourself and stick to it.
Pretend like you are going to work and must clock in at a certain time or you're
going to get fired. That will make you determined!
